Eternal Flame Sculptures, signed and numbered open edition

Eternal-flame-group2 I first created the Eternal Flame Sculptures as a display tool for the Ann Arbor Art Fair— I couldn't have live fire in my firebowls at the fair and I didn't like any of the available options for fake flames. Then I had the idea to cut my own flames and enamel them. With the addition of FireCrystals, they made a great display! A small collection of these sculptures would be an amazing way to turn an unused fireplace into a cheerful blaze that never needs feeding and never goes out.

Each Eternal Flame Sculpture is a one of a kind sculpture that will never be repeated. Although their bright colors and cheerful look could fool you, they are made from 100% recycled steel. The bases come from a local factory that cuts LOTS of holes into thick steel and sends the left over circles to the scrap yard. The flames are cut from scrap steel left over from making my firebowls.

Eternal Flame Sculptures are basically eternal… They're cut from heavy steel and finished with powder coat enamel that is suitable for indoor or outdoor display. But don't leave them in your firebowl or fireplace when in use— the powder coat enamel will burn off at 400°F.

The Eternal flames are an open edition of sculpture— each is signed and numbered, but there is no predetermined limit to how many I'll make. They're too cool to limit to a set number.

Eternal-flame-group1 Click the image at left to see how shadows from one flame sculpture fall across the others to create depth and a layered effect. This is why they work so well as a group.

I'm posting the currently available sculptures for sale as individual pieces, but if you'd like to order a group of five or more I can offer a 20% discount.

Contact me at http://www.johntunger.com/contact.html to arrange group pricing.

Choose your Eternal Flame. Each is a signed and numbered original.

Recycled Steel Garden Gong

Recycled steel tank zen garden bell

This garden gong makes a nice zen accent for any garden. Each is hand-cut from a recycled Oxygen tank. The decorative piece on top is a scrap piece from making the Great Bowl O' Fire fire pits. My gongs are all one of a kind and tend to vary in design and tone. There is no ringer or "clanger" on the inside of the gong, but they come with a steel mallet for ringing that you can see if you click the detail image below.

The hanger shown in the photo is made from a farm implement that plows the earth. The hanger must be ordered separately. I think that it makes a nice complement to the gong, but many people prefer to use their own method of hanging.

Ocarina: ScrapYard Abstract No. 01

Abstract No. 01 Ocarina
Ocarina: Scrapyard Abstract No. 1, 2005.
Recycled steel.

20" H x 21.5" W x 9.25" D
Purchase Ocarina for $425
($345 plus $80 S+H).

Ocarina was the first of a series of abstracts created from chunks of steel that have been processed in a huge crusher/shear unit the size of a building. I feel it resembles a fish on the one side and a bird on the other, while the overall form reminds me of terra cotta ocarinas I've seen from Mexico and South America. The patina is natural and will change over time if the sculpture is placed outdoors. This piece displays best on a table or pedestal.

Between the Flames: Small Tabletop Sculptures

cool Scrap
Between the Flames: Small Tabletop Sculptures 2006.
Recycled steel.
dimensions variable

The sculptures below are made  from  shapes left over when I cut the flames for the Great Bowl O Fire. They're the spaces between the flames. Although they look simple, it's a bit deceptive. Almost all the shapes look cool by themselves, and they look really interesting when they're just piled up on the ground… but the minute you start trying to get them to work together in small numbers it becomes difficult. I've thrown out more than a few sculptures that started with promise but just didn't gel.

It requires a delicate balance of formal elegance and chance to get these to work. Essentially, the goal is to preserve the raw fact of the bits while harmonizing them on another level. I guess the best way to explain it might be to say that it's much easier to do a successful abstract by creating all the parts from scratch… when you're working with existing shapes, you're given much less control over how they fit together. This makes working with these pieces both more frustrating and more interesting. And although they take too long to be a productive use of my time, I imagine I'll keep working on more as an exercise for my eye and mind. Plus, I really like to use my own scrap as much as the material I buy at the scrap yard… I could trade it in by the pound for other steel, but it's nice to be able to actually make something from it instead.

Sad Bunny Sculpture

sad bunny
Sad Bunny, 2006
Recycled steel,

17.5" H x 18" W x 6" D
Collaboration with Mya Smith
Purchase Sad Bunny for $180
($150 plus $30 S+H).

Sad Bunny is a collaboration I did with my daughter Mya, one of many sculptures we did this summer using her drawings and my welding and cutting chops. If you click on the lefthand thumbnail below you'll see what I think is the coolest feature of this piece: the bunny's shadow has a totally different expression on his face… an angry, evil expression. Of course, you have to get the angle of the light just right to reproduce it, but I think it's kind of a cool hidden allegory. Most of the mean people I've met in life were hurt themselves at some point (I mean, true enough to be trite, right?). But having the sad bunny's shadow take on an evil persona is awesome. I should really build a lightbox around it that forces the shadow to the correct angle, but I like the piece as it stands.

The steel is recycled plate from the scrapyard, and the plants are bits left over from cutting out the flames on the Pot-deFeu recycled grills.
